CARL LYONS TOOK POINT as Able Team advanced down the stairwell. It wasn’t going to be easy, as the building had been constructed with only one central stairwell, along with a single elevator shaft. This made the building a fatal funnel, as both sides could only approach each other from one direction. Lyons was in the lead, his shotgun quick, handy and capable of producing a volume of death and violence to greet any ambush they faced. With double O buckshot in both the tubular and box magazine under the barrel, Lyons had thirteen shells, each packed with nine .36-caliber projectiles. Emptying the stubby blaster would put 117 projectiles in the air, turning any corridor, stairwell or doorway into a slashing rain of copper-jacketed lead, the equivalent of emptying four Uzi submachine guns at once.

According to Schwarz’s security network, the opposition had entered through a basement window, and hadn’t exited the way they had entered. It made sense, as there was a maintenance room in the basement that had the panels necessary to control the telephone lines and electrical wiring for the building. The sudden blackout showed that the men in the basement had done their job, but now it was simply a matter of the two teams hooking up together. There was little chance that the teams had a snatch in mind, but Lyons was curious to see if they were in communication with outside support. If that was the case, it would simply give them more intel to gather and to examine where they had come from and who had hired them.

There was the scuff of a boot on a concrete step’s lip. Lyons and his partners froze. The enemy was within earshot, which meant that silence was necessary right now. The stairs would provide cover as their stone-and-steel reinforcement rebar would stop most bullets cold, but then this would turn into a standoff. He glanced back and saw that Blancanales had taken out a small canister from his battle harness.

Lyons knew full well that it was a flash-bang grenade, capable of producing enormous noise and light, capable of blinding and deafening foes. In the close quarters of a stairwell, it would also produce sufficient pressure to cause long-term injury.

Lyons gave his partner the nod, and Blancanales eased out the cotter pin, held the arming spoon under pressure and released it slowly. Blancanales was cooking the fuse down to make it almost impossible to catch and throw back. Once he reached his countdown number, he hurled the canister over the railing, releasing a loud bellow to equalize the pressure inside and outside of his ears. Lyons and Schwarz echoed their friend’s yell, knowing full well the pain produced by explosions and gunfights in close quarters echo chambers like these had the potential to permanently deafen them. The trio lost nothing in terms of the element of surprise as the flash-bang detonated only a few moments after it had left Blancanales’s hand.

The minute the bang went off, Lyons charged
